Pride by ibi zoboi5/21/2023 And in my opinion, Zoboi picked the perfect setting to retell this story. I loved that this was a diverse retelling of Pride and Prejudice. But one day, a rich black family moves in across the street and everything changes. Pride follows Zuri Benitez, a 17 year old resident of Bushwick, who loves her hood and her loud, large, Haitian-Dominican family. However, I had such high expectations for this and they were not met. You guys know that Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books of all time, and you know that I was beyond excited about Pride – an ownvoices retelling set in Bushwick. It’s Booktubeathon Day 1 and I have already finished a book! I decided I need to review it asap, while it’s still fresh in my mind and when I can explain why this failed me on so many levels. “It is a truth universally acknowledged that when rich people move into the hood, where it’s a little bit broken and a little bit forgotten, the first thing they want to to do is clean it up.”

Lullaby by L.R.W. Lee5/21/2023 Lullaby takes place in the Altairn Empire, where every person has their own sandman or sand maiden. I have increased my rating here to reflect my new rating of her book (but I also left my previous rating), and any issues that were addressed in the new edition have *s next to them to indicate that it is either less of a problem or gone entirely. The second edition – the version currently for sale, as of February 2018 – has addressed a lot of these issues. After posting, the author had reached out to me and other reviewers to edit the book and republish. Note: This review was initially written for the 1st Edition, released January 2018. “I believed creativity to be the expression of the person, who they were inside. Unfortunately, the writing style, pacing, and the characters make this book very disappointing. Review In A Nutshell: Lullaby had a great premise and could have been amazing. trigger warning for this book: sexual assault, rape/

Driving while black book5/21/2023 “Driving While Black” covers some of the history of American civil rights through the lens of automobiles and their overlap with social history. “home”.Īt the same time, I’m also committed to reading more BIPOC authors and topics, so toddled off to the library to see what I could track down on the shelves. With the world in this state of flux (for all of the many different reasons), I’m really interested in learning more about the history and the lives of the many people who call the U.S.

Avedon by Norma Stevens5/21/2023 He possessed a mystique so unique it was itself a kind of genius-everyone fell under his spell. Avedon dazzled even his most dazzling subjects. He also went on the road to find and photograph remarkable uncelebrated faces, with an eye toward constructing a grand composite picture of America. Over six richly productive decades, he created landmark advertising campaigns, iconic fashion photographs (as the star photographer for Harper’s Bazaar and then Vogue), groundbreaking books, and unforgettable portraits of everyone who was anyone. Richard Avedon was arguably the world’s most famous photographer-as artistically influential as he was commercially successful. An intimate biography of Richard Avedon, the legendary fashion and portrait photographer who “helped define America’s image of style, beauty and culture” (The New York Times), by his longtime collaborator and business partner Norma Stevens and award-winning author Steven M.

Duck by kim dare5/20/2023 This is probably my favorite retelling of The Ugly Duckling. They only have to get through Ori’s first shift. No one has ever made him feel as safe and cared for as Raynard. Ori has no doubt as to what his choice will be. Afterwards, Raynard will give Ori the chance to choose to remain his or to seek other arrangements. Having Ori as a submissive until his full shift is the deal. When Ori offers said ass up, Raynard holds back until he can’t any longer. The fact that Raynard can’t get his mind off Ori’s ass or that Ori might be a duck and therefore naturally submissive doesn’t help things. Besides, Raynard has a monstrosity of a house he’s inherited from his uncle that is in need of care. When the hawk takes exception to Ori’s treatment, the head of the nest agrees to send Ori home with him.įrederick Raynard has no use for an untrained servant, but there is no way he is leaving Ori at the nest under those conditions. So when taunting and abuse from the crows of the nest are interrupted by a newcomer-a hawk-Ori is confused. As a duck, he knows his place, and that place is the bottom of the ladder. While awaiting his first full shift, Ori is working for the nest as a server. Orphaned as a child, all Ori Jones knows of his origin is that he’s probably a duck-an ugly duckling at that-because that’s what the elders told him after his first partial shift.
