Mrs Kelly by Grantlee Kieza5/22/2023 ![]() The hunt for the Kelly gang became a fierce battle of egos between senior police as they prepared for the final shootout with Australia's most infamous bushrangers, a gun battle that etched Ned Kelly's physical toughness and defiance of authority into Australian folklore. The police officers were brave, poorly paid and often ailing, some nearing retirement and others young with small children, but they risked death and illness in the hope of finding the men who had killed their comrades. ![]() In the 20 months between those shootouts and aided by a network of informers, hundreds of lawmen, soldiers, undercover agents and a team of Aboriginal trackers combed rugged mountains in freezing conditions in search of the outlaws. The desperate search would end when Kelly and his gang, wearing suits of armour, tried to derail a train before waging their final bloody gun battle with police in the small Victorian town of Glenrowan. When Ned Kelly and his band of young tearaways ambushed and killed three brave policemen in a remote mountain camp in 1878, they sparked the biggest and most expensive manhunt Australia had seen. ![]() ![]() The desperate manhunt to bring down Australia's most notorious outlaw ![]()

Low Chicago by George R.R. Martin5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Martin is expressing regret about his unfinished novels, which are now overshadowed by the television run of Game of Thrones, which aired its final episode on HBO on May 19, 2019. Yet, while Martin has spent the past decade teasing sixth book The Winds of Winter, he now finally concedes the unideal nature of the rollout. The situation, now a decade old from the release of the 2011 fifth book, A Dance with Dragons, has become a meme-inspiring legend, centered on what is now the most-publicized case of writer’s block in contemporary literary history. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, famously remains incomplete. The road by mccormick5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Speaking of writers who have imitated him, he says, “You really have to be aware that there are no quotation marks, and write in such a way as to guide people as to who’s speaking.” Otherwise, confusion reigns.Ĭareful McCarthy reader Oprah says she “saw a colon once” in McCarthy’s prose, but she never encountered a semicolon. McCarthy stresses that this way of writing dialogue requires particular deliberation. In his Oprah interview, he says MacKinlay Kantor was the first writer he read who left them out. So what “weird little marks” does McCarthy allow, or not, and why? Below is a brief summary of his stated rules for punctuation: I mean, if you write properly you shouldn’t have to punctuate. There’s no reason to blot the page up with weird little marks. James Joyce is a good model for punctuation. ![]() Joyce’s influence dominates, and in discussion of punctuation, McCarthy stresses that his minimalist approach works in the interest of maximum clarity. But in his very rare 2008 televised interview with Oprah Winfrey, McCarthy cites two other antecedents: James Joyce and forgotten novelist MacKinlay Kantor, whose Andersonville won the Pulitzer Prize in 1955. ![]() Cormac McCarthy has been-as one 1965 reviewer of his first novel, The Orchard Tree, dubbed him-a “disciple of William Faulkner.” He makes admirable use of Faulknerian traits in his prose, and I’d always assumed he inherited his punctuation style from Faulkner as well. ![]()

Vipers and virtuosos sav r miller5/22/2023 ![]() But the comparison between the main couple (Kal & Elena) and the Ancient Greek rulers of the underworld is repeated multiple times throughout the book. This book is not marketed as a retelling of Hades and Persephone - something I think is incredibly important to point out. Promises And Pomegranates - Personal Opinions Just because a story starts off in such a dark way, does not mean there is no pathway into the light. But will Kal be able to protect Elena without causing her to hate him? Can two people who are so different find a way to love one another? Can Elena forgive her family for their actions against her? ![]() She is taken from her family, whisked off to an island to live on, and forced to abandon her hopes and dreams for a life she never asked for. ![]() ![]() When Elena’s father realises her safety is in danger, marriage to Kal seems the only logical conclusion - whether she likes it or not.Īs the story unfolds, Kal and Elena’s forced marriage embodies the ancient dynamics of Hades and Persephone. Kal Anderson, conversely, is known as the opposite: a retired doctor with an imposingly large figure known for his very specific service to the mafia.
